English resume
Etukeno is a communications company owned by Dr. Engineer Kari Ojala. Our most actual activity now is to promote a post and beam (timber frame) house concept design by Mr. Ojala. The Finnish name is ristikkotalo, that is a grid house perhaps (risti in Finnish is a cross, talo is a house). This concept is not used in Finland traditionally (we have wood enough, forests full of it), but times are changing, and with today's materials and prices a timber frame house is most suitable for low-cost housing at the moment. That's why a Finnsh version of these houses was needed.
To prove the benefits of timber frame houses a model house, with 50 sq meters of space, was built in Loviisa some 90 kms from Helsinki. This house is open for all to visit - better to tell before you arrive, in any case. The mail addresses are up there on this page (first button is to the company, the other to Mr. Ojala; the addresses are also written up there. The address of the model house is Pitkäniementie 14, 07910 Valko - that's in Loviisa as mentioned before. You can find our tel. nbr up there, too.
The idea of the Finnsh timber frame house is to use the cheapest materials, make things simple and avoid all high-priced professional work. This house you can build with your friends if you are strong and skillful, or hire a pair of reliable wood workers (carpenters) to do the work. Small local companies are optimal for this, but big house factories or manufactures are not. Their system doesn't result in simple, low price housing, but many levels of officers who all want to take their share. So, keep it simple! In the Finnish concept also traditions, health and environment issues and ecology are essential - the bigger companies are interested on these only in theory, but can't do measures in practice.
What does our concept mean in real life? The frame of the house is built using glued, laminated timber which you can buy ready cut for a cheap price, having many standard sizes. You can have the corners made ready for screwing together, and you don't need log specialists at all. The diagonal forces are taken to diagonal minor logs inside the walls. The insulation is paper-based ecowool, which you can buy ready assembled at a very low price, too. The rest of the structures are quite traditional, so normal workers are able to do all. Anyway, there are several details developed by our company that cut the labour amount needed. Building a 50 m2 house like we did, some 400-500 working hours was needed in theory, in practice some more will be spent, regarding to the workers.
So, you are welcome to get more information about the house and the concept. If you want to build your own "Loviisa-house", we are happy to help (for some money for the design, of course). A book was written about the whole project, showing some 82 photos and 34 illustrations, and that can be ordered both on paper and e-book format from the publisher Aviador Oy - the button to reach their web site is up there. The name of the book is Hirret ristiin ja taloksi.
If you are interested in makig business, we are more than ready for that! We believe that the Finnish timber house concept could - and should! - be exported. The same needs for low cost ecological housing can be seen in most countries, and multiplaying the Finnish model might be one of the good solutions. In the optimal situation somebody (you?) would have a licence for the concept and all help from Finland to develop it even more. Customers could buy the design and drawings, get some reductions for the materials perhaps, and find a proper group of workers to build the house itself. If this would happen in several countries, we would call that a good business.
And yes, we speak English!
